Available local technology must be taken up fast to help reindustrialise South Africa

Strong public-private collaboration is needed to help South Africa to win back its top position in ferrochrome, ferromanganese, ferroalloys and even some other metals. The restart know-how is already there for ferrochrome in particular and what is remarkable is that the new low-electricity, low-emission technology can be retrofitted to restart the many ferroalloy smelters that have been put on care and maintenance.

This is an opportunity second to none to reform a platform for considerable reindustrialisation in that it can all be done at globally competitive cost with raw metals and minerals that we hold in abundance. A major partnership that is already established should know in the short term the extent to which the new SmeltDirect technology is commercial so that the go-ahead can be given to capitalise retrofittings and restarts.
